A Freshman Poem by Stephen Howard

A Freshman

A Freshman enters through the doors of an unfamiliar school.
He looks around trying to find a friendly face.
Now he wanders the halls looking for anyone to befriend.
Through the chaos of the hurried bodies, he sees her,
Standing, talking about a long summer.
Walking towards her now, she sees him approach.
She shows him a warm and gentle smile.
The Freshman now knows who he wants to befriend.

Now a Sophomore enters a school.
He scans the buzzing halls for a familiar face.
Only to see a warm smile.
He knows that she is not talking about the summer.
For he know that she regrets every moment that she spent with him.
