A Father's Day Poem... Poem by chantelle ribeiro

A Father's Day Poem...

Rum and maple comes to mind
Your unlit pipe dusted and memorialized
Warm brown eyes filled with love
Your photograph against my wall
A rosary its decoration
Your voice a smooth lullaby
Plays clearly in my mind
Your music fills my soul
I remember how you sang
I was so young
Suddenly
I am a little girl again
I remember your tickly moustache
The laughlines that I loved
I sigh as I sit here missing you
For now I am older
Wiser
I now recall the sadness
hidden in your smile
As I strummed my guitar
Your tired mind
Your ravaged soul
But I was so young
I never saw
The worries that stopped your heart
That ravaged you slowly
But still you said you were fine
As long as we needed you
You were content
Do you remember reading to me?
Your Wilbur Smith novels that you loved
Resides safely in my bookshelf
I sometimes take them out and hold them close
The smell of old musty paper somehow
reminding me of childhood days
Reading, but not understanding
The complicated words no child could understand
But I wanted to know what my daddy knew
Like a sponge I soaked up your love
Your music
Your character
And now I am like you
But stronger
You taught me to be unique
Like you
Where are you, daddy?
I wonder if you have conversations
with God
Whether you look down and smile
Or sometimes wipe a tear from your eye...
Today I celebrate your life
I love you daddy and always will
I miss you and wish you were here still
Your influence was great
Our father,
Our Hero
Our martyr...

Applauding your reverance, dedication and love to your Dad and his memory. This is a heartfelt poem and only one a loving daughter could write. I look forward to reading more of your work. Kudos! Sincerely, Nancy

This poem is in remembrance to my wonderful father: Jose Manuel Lopes Ribeiro. A true gentleman, a wonderful father, my best friend and the kindest person... I love you daddy and miss you so much! This poem reflects the pain one experiences in the demise of a loved one, the memories, taking you back to the time when they are most important - in my case, my childhood. The music reference is because he was a musician, played the drums and did vocals in a Latino band. He influenced me most in my life and I too still to this day play guitar and piano... every time thinking of him as for about two years after his death I could never perform again in front of a crowd. I actually never touched an instrument for a few years because it was just too painful... A person never knows what you had in a person completely until you lose them... Rest in peace daddy...
