A Closed Body Poem by Adeeb Kamal Ad-Deen

A Closed Body

Your body is closed
Like a circle of magic.
I have drawn it with my blood
But the Jinni stole its enigmatic letter.
Your body is closed
Like a myth walking by feet
Like the back of a great tortoise.
I have not tried to open your body.
I have lacked the knives and the wild dances.
I have lacked hoes and bayonets.
I have lacked bolt of the blue and meaning.
Meaning of what?
Meaning of contemporary lies.
I was as honest as a prophet.
Meaning of what?
Meaning of artificial rain.
I was full of water as a great Euphrates.
Meaning of what?
Meaning of selling and buying.
Yes, I was the great loser.
Your body is closed.
I said to Time: 'Give me a spear
To break the back of the tortoise.'
He gave me a letter.
The letter - O! Puzzling woman - does not break
The back of the tortoise
But it writes amulets and puzzlements on it.
Your body is closed.
I needed to go into
To see the sun
I am the blind who lost his sight
One thousand years before the Christ's nativity.
I needed to go into
To touch on the feast
I am the orphan who lost his father
In the market's crowding.
To sit on the throne
I am the prince who lost royalty
Among the crowded plots and conspiracies.
To write a poem
I am the letter that lost his great poet
Among the crowded images and meanings.
To catch the prophethood's bird
I am the blood that lost its heart
In the great crowded indifference.
You body is closed.
I needed to go into
To open the gates of paradise
I am the saint whose partisans crucified
In the jam of the event
In the jam of the quake
Then they cried at him to the death.
