A Christmas Thought Poem by Hugh Cobb

A Christmas Thought

Rating: 4.1

Yes, it's Christmas once again:
Commercial dance nearly done
only morning-after sales left,
unless of course you're Orthodox
then you're still caught in the insanity.

Used to be, there was meaning;
something more to this day
something that connected us
to our own sense of divinity:
The beginning of a story
whose power changed a world...

Now under gray skies and
w/ Christmas jingles on radio
and pumped muzak into every shop
Perhaps its time to slow down, to stop
& consider that old story.

'The power of scripture is in the story, '
so I wrote one day.
& the power of this story
still hasn't gone away.
Just buried beneath
the weight of cheesy Christmas cards,
tinsel, dried fruitcake
& too much discarded gift wrap
nearly obscuring its meaning
which longs only
to be heard in the simple
silence of the human heart.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Hugh, thanks for this poem...just in time too. I get a little irritated at Christmas time...capitalism...that's all it is. I hate shopping...but love giving....and I love remembering a time when life didn't seem as busy...this poem was just what this ol' girl needed. You're a champ among poets.

very well-written piece with a powerful delivery...it really makes you sad if you think about it...keeping speaking the truth, my friend!

Meaningful and lovely thoughts, especially the line about our own divinity.

the profound sometimes disappears ftrom the human heart fearing as it does ultimate matters more seeming safely found in the acquisition of the latest fashion but in the end a poem like this brings the heart to where it must always return a fine poem
