tonight
I write
by candlelight
I watch the flame quiver helplessly
I become lost in inevitable metaphors
as it flickers in and out like you and me

I lit this candle for you
to go alongside your pictures
I stare in wonder at our ever-changing faces
and interpret your old letters

remember when we watched the black sky?
for you, if I could, I'd take down every single star
none of then could shine as brightly as you
none of them is quite as special as you are

we sleep in the same city every night
but somehow you seem so far from me
you can't hear my heart beating and you will never understand
my reasons for such intense fantasy

I am attempting to use my words
to illustrate the flame and its significance
but my phrases falter and it all becomes too simple
so my ideas lose their balance

take me away from love
so I can see clearly out this window
because all that is in view is how much I care for you
and there is no path for my eyes to follow

tonight
I write
by candlelight
I'm afraid to let the darkness appear
but I blow it out and I lie awake
and think of everything that I hold dear
