A Broken Promise - Poem by Barry Middleton

if love is a promise in spring
so love may as surely take wing
for springtime must end
though lovers pretend
what love's frail illusion can bring
.
no love is a union of souls
to hold us until we grow old
for love seems to fade
like spring's masquerade
when seasons return to the cold
.
so love will await the refrain
the seasons are ever to blame
for love will know fall
and winter's dark pall
until only memories remain

Topic(s) of this poem: illusion, love

The age old story, beautifully crafted.
What even seems the truest does not last
And when the grief dies we remember the good times
Life is so short even these fleeting loves can be (Report) Reply

A very good write about the experiences of love and the comparison of love with the changing seasons! Love sometimes does change! Was it just an illusion, a mirage, or our imagination of what love should be? Of course opinions are based on experiences! (Report) Reply

You have made comparison of love with seasons. Well, it may be for some but not all. Love should be unconditional not based on promises. Any relationship based only on extracted promises is not love, (Report) Reply

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And opinions about love are probably based on one's experiences.

congrats on being poet of the day, Barry. This poem is so refreshingly different; for a change, someone dares to go against the notion that true love is forever... (Report) Reply

Although we love illusions, reality is something that comes out at some point... Promises in love are often just plain exaggerations... A finely written one.. Thank you.. (Report) Reply

Well done, Barry. I like the way you put three limericks together, so to speak, to formulate this poem. Wes Vogler would be proud. Congratulations on having it selected as Poem of the Day! (Report) Reply

I would like to disagree with this pristine poem's unfortunate conclusion. But it seems hard to do. (Report) Reply

People find reasons and vanish with seasons... Truth well encapsulated in this beautiful poem. Nothing lasts seasons nor reasons. My compliments (Report) Reply

A brilliant poem on fading love as with passing seasons, a candid but true view remarkably expressed in these lines. (Report) Reply

A realistic view of love. Feelings n emotions are as much mortal as human life. Time brings change in everything, nothing remains the same. Well articulated wisdom. (Report) Reply

A promise is a promise no matter how long it takes! But, if it is broken along the way then, there is no trust. Thanks for sharing. (Report) Reply

You've likened stages of love to the seasons. The speaker communicates in rhythmic rhyming verse that contrasts the story being told... Broken promises and love is fleeting and not real. You've cleverly used words with layered meaning which I LOVE! And I really mean that. Congratulations on having the poem of the day. Oh... And how about summer love? ;) .10. (Report) Reply

A universal story that all can understand... At least those who have loved and lost. Now for fun and frolicking summer love!

Thanks Pamela. I did not think that particular poem was that good. Shows what I know I guess.
