A Bear Named 'B' Poem by Colleen Courtney

A Bear Named 'B'

Rating: 4.5

He came into your life
It was twenty years today
Little did we know back then
The tremendous role that he would play
He was delivered to the hospital
With yellow roses in a vase
We placed him in your bassinet
From that day by your side he'd stay

He started off so fresh and clean
His newness pastel yellow
His chubbiness and fullness
Over time the years would mellow
He never really had a name
It was left up to fate to see
Then one day playing in your crib
I heard you call out 'B'

As you got older days flew past
Your childhood he had shared
Beside you in your bed at night
He helped allay your fears
And for every day when you were sad
It was he who dried your tears

He's travelled far and wide with you
Your loyal bear friend 'B'
Not just around the US of A
But France and England too

College came and off you went
Together you and he
Another phase in growing up
With your forever best friend 'B'

He's not so new and fresh these days
His stuffing limbs grown thin
His yellowness has faded fast
His button eyes have sunken in

Some may look and see not much
Just a dirty old raggedy bear
But to you my beautiful sweet caring girl
He'll be loved and always held dear.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem to give to my daughter on her 20th birthday coming up this August. She received a teddy bear the morning after she was born from one of my sisters and little did we know then what an important part of her life he would become. To this day that bear still sleeps next to her every night and sits on her bed every day! It's funny how a stuffed teddy bear can seem so 'real' after so many years.

For, on a table drawn beside his head, He had put, within his reach, A box of counters and a red-vein'd stone, A piece of glass abraded by the beach, And six or seven shells, A bottle with bluebells, And two French copper coins, ranged there with careful art, To comfort his sad heart. Colleen, this was just awesome. My son had a favorite stuffed animal as well. Believe he is still in a box in our garage...my son married leaving him behind.

This stuffed toy was highly animated by your words. There were moments when B seemed almost like a living animal, a credit to your words in making him come alive for us the way he always had for your daughter and the family. The toy takes on symbolic dimensions as he accompanies her growing from a child through adolescence to young adulthood. Her relationship with B reminds me of what one of my students once said, Everything that is loved is alive.

A wonderful poem except for the words tremendous and sweet and the expression the US of A none of which appear to fit in terms of rhythm or line length. For that reason I have given it a nine. Sorry if this sounds arrogant but I'm in an over-sincere mood today.
