58 In Cargo Poem by Marcus Smith Poetry

58 In Cargo

Inspectors at Dover discovered us
Slumped behind crates of tomatoes,
Suffocated in the airtight freight-hold
On the hottest weekend of the year.
Five hours across the Channel, the truck's
Refrigeration unit switched off....
The newspapers and TV tell us
We died dreaming better lives.

I think we all know a better life -
I still see it shining on the screen -
And sometimes, locked in the freight-hold,
Trapped with ash-heaps of longing,
We die dreaming a better life.

Marcus, thank you so much for writing this. I feel so sad and feel like crying while reading this poem and it is important that you have given life to this fact in our world through your lines. Thank you very much.
