134. I Am My Own Individual Person Poem by Jaden Knight

134. I Am My Own Individual Person

Fed up with people asking who my real parents are
as if it really matters to them
why should who they were affect people’s judgement of me
it’s not exactly as if they’re going to be at my wedding
if and when I get married

I really don’t need reminding why
I haven’t even seen either of them since before age 4
it’s bad enough that I still have the scars
giving to the world a clue of exactly what happened
worse that I still get the flash backs sometimes

Shouldn’t who I am be more important to you
than someone who you’re not going to meet
family profiling is all very well
but it won’t tell you very much about me

For all these years I’ve grown up my own way
I’m not like either of them
while may I have parts of both their personality traits
I’m not the son of my mother and father
I am my own individual person

I agree with this so much, and detest that question. Our parents dont define us, if they do than there is no hope for me. I dont like that thought. Great write! !

Indeed we are all our own individual selves, despite how others would like to imagine it. I remember for me it was a difficult thing to realize I didn't have any of my mother's good traits. But we have to find our own way, however different. I'm sort of rambling now, but I just want to say I can feel the raw emotion in this piece and in my own way I relate. ~Nika
