காட்டுச் சுடரொளி மரம்
பொதிகை மலை முகடுகளில்
பஞ்சு போன்ற வெண்பனி
படர்ந்த மேகக் கூட்டங்கள்!

பண்பொழிப் பள்ளத்தாக்குகளில்
புகை மூட்டமாய் எங்கெங்கும்
பரவிக் காட்சியளிக்கும் மூடுபனி!

குழுக்களாக வியூகம் வகுத்து
வானில் புகலிடம் தேடிப் பறக்கும்
பாடும் பறவைக் கூட்டம்!

மரங்கள் அடர்ந்த வனத்தில்
நிசப்தம் கலைத்து ரீங்கரிக்கும்
தேனுண்ட வண்டுகள்!

உயர் பாறைகளிலும்
கிளைக்குக் கிளை தாவியும் கனிகளைப்
பறித்து உண்ணும் வானரங்கள்!

பெருமழையாக வானிலிருந்து
கொட்டிவிடத் துடிக்கும் சிதறலாய்
மெல்லிய மழைத் தூறல்கள்!

மலைச்சாரலில் இருந்து
ஓங்காரமாய் ஓடி வரும் எழில்மிகு
நீர்வீழ்ச்சிகள் கண் கொள்ளாக் காட்சி!

செக்கச் சிவந்த மலர்களுடன்
காட்டுச் சுடரொளி மரம் -அங்கே
கண்களுக்குப் பெருவிருந்து!

Flame of the Forest

Flame of the Forest (காட்டுச் சுடரொளி மரம்) is a medium sized tree, growing from 20 to 4O feet high, and the trunk is usually crooked and twisted with irregular branches and rough, grey bark. This tree lokks very ugly in December and January when most of the leaves fall: but from January to March it truly becomes a tree of flame, a riot of orange and vermilion flowers covering the entire crown.

Each flower consists of five petals comprising one standard, two smaller wings and a very curved beak-shaped keel. It is this keel which gives it the name of Parrot Tree. The flowers of this tree were used to make color for the festival of Holi.

In Manipur, there is an interesting cultural use of the wood of this tree with beautiful flowers - when a member of the Meitei community dies and, for some reasons, his body cannot be be found, the wood of this tree is cremated in place of the body.

A postal stamp was issued by the Indian Postal Department to commemorate this flower.
