Peter Kasius Poems

Conservation starts on laundry day
As wet white sheets are pinned away
On clothesline stretched and taunt
To catch what sunbeams have always brought
...

Thundering hoofbeats are heard in the vale
then a whirl away horse come up the trail
As a jazz clarinetist is playing the blues,
there is a foot tapping gallop by a hundred kazoos
...

Naked branches bending back and forth
By winter's wicked wind blowing from the north
Ah, man shivers standing still for the bus at dawn,
Delayed downtown from frozen frantic traffic.
...

Be advised the Grim Reaer is quick as a cat
Entering and exiting before you can scat
With no sense of boundaries or personal space
No show of feeling for the sad human race

Conservation

Conservation starts on laundry day
As wet white sheets are pinned away
On clothesline stretched and taunt
To catch what sunbeams have always brought
The power to dry and freshen on the line
The sheets and towels of many kind
Socks and shirts free of gray
Reveal the appeal to man on laundry day, yea
But is secondary to Conservation's
High ideals and lofty goal of preservation
And forward vision for the restoration of a perfect planet,
The natural world before consumption damned it
With an industrial air that palls and kills
The flowering and fertile land, see, see the green and rolling hills
Vulnerable to the greed of selfish men with money power
Who humble common men way beyond and far below
The splendid penthouse atop the corporate tower.
