Every year I struggle
with students on the past simple.
This year my students can’t tackle
and they’ve asked questions I can’t handle:
...

What
did you say?
You have lost all your worksheets?
And you think I should give you new ones?
...

In this stuffy cubicle, we were told
“xxx confirmed of being infected
of HUMAN SWINE FLU”
Shocked, horrified cries around.
...

Dear Mum and Dad

When I was three,
I could hardly speak.
...

The differences amongst nations
in culture, habit and language.
This is God’s creations
to punish we antagonistic humans.
...

7.

is what the teachers tell,
is what the textbooks say,
is what the parents yell,
and what the professors claim.
...

In a city of sneer, a world of jeer,
Grew a girl who was always fear
Of being mocked, of being scoffed.
She always lamented at the loft…

This is originally a shape poem in a human shape but I can't do it in the textbox here. Many people don't get attention from others just because of being so ordinary. For instance, the average students at a school usually don't receive any attention from teachers. This poem was inspired by a university lecturer who told me that teachers should actually attend more to the average students.

Hi!
I'm a man on earth,
...

Sitting in silence
I close my eyes
to make clear of my conscience
to reflect what I’ve done
...

Being vexed,
I needed an outlet
and turn out I found
you and you and you
...

Dear students,

I have been working hard here
in this cramped, messy cubicle.
...

The cruelest torture of mankind
is when you have to bear
the painful consequences
of someone else’s mistakes.
...

You shut the door,
others can't get in.
You blame others
for not approaching you
...

When I was young,
I had a dream.
I wanted to be
the first in class

Peggy Chau Biography

I am just an ordinary person who is interested in creative writing. I always find it easier to express myself through writing, and surprisingly especially in my second language. I am teaching English at a secondary school and I would like to explore more in this field to develop students' creativity and language ability.)

The Past Simple

Every year I struggle
with students on the past simple.
This year my students can’t tackle
and they’ve asked questions I can’t handle:

If we have “held” and “hold”
and we have “tell” and “told”
and also “sell” and “sold”,
why not “bell” and “bold”?

I force them to remember:
“lend” and “lent”
“spend” and “spent”
“send” and “sent”.
They then say “tend” and “tent”
One more: “vend” and “vent”.

Don’t forget “forgot”,
Remember “get” and “got”,
But “let” shouldn’t be with “lot”
and they asked: How about “set” and “sot”?

“Why not? ” they asked.
I started to lose my temper.
“Don’t ask, just remember!
REMEMBER, REMEMBER and REMEMBER! ”

But finally they still say:
“sit” and “sat”
“meet” and “met”
and so…
“bit” and “bat”
“hit” and “hat”
and…
“fit”, the past “FAT”!
