Oscar Velazquez Poems

'Hey ma! Estoy enfermo, I’m sick.”
Woke up today, eyes bright red,
muscles ache, voice is raspy.
“Ma! I'm sick, ' I said.
...

I dreamed dreams
dripped down
from above
contained in
...

For you,

I'll draw (in color)
a picture of myself
...

Met a crazy white-lady, she
cast wicked incantations in our mentes
promised
instant dreams

Pbtequila Perfect Medicina (In Spanglish) /B/P

'Hey ma! Estoy enfermo, I’m sick.”
Woke up today, eyes bright red,
muscles ache, voice is raspy.
“Ma! I'm sick, ' I said.
Here, “toma esto, take some Sudafed.”
But do I look like a methamphetamine fiend?
That stuff's bad, made in lab,
of chemicals I can't pronounce.
Ingredients: pseudoephedrine, it's a noun.
“Poisonous crystalline alkaloid.”
Now…I don’t know...
but I don't like the way that sounds!
Your old-school Ma, Mexicana!
Cure me like when I was a kid
and all it took was
'sana sana colita de rana.'
Give me something else, natural from the ground.
Perhaps a lil’ lemon, lime, some salty salt,
the liquor drawer, now that's where
el remedio must be stored!
Dame un baso, pour a lil’ warm lemon-honey-tea,
top it off with un tequilazo!
Now that's a remedy for me,
a cure with history!
Its legacy, though once a mystery,
through the language of the Nahuatl,
we've come to solve it.
El tequila, more than just a fix for alcoholics,
from agave, (a plant) mystic, divine.
Discovered by Los Azteca, way back in time.
As the Aztec legend goes, El Tequila was found
en la sangre (blood) of
Mayahuel, wife of Quetzalcoatl, god of gods.
After being eaten by stars
and buried underground
agave plants, all-around, were born,
soon after, bolted by lightning storms;
their leaves torn,
outpouring Mayahuel's blood,
now known as El Tequila.
Ma, now that's the perfect Medicina!
When hundreds of years later,
in Mexico, influenza hit,
no black plague occurred, thanks to Tequila,
remedy, and drink of choice to sip.
Ma, I can't stand how I'm feeling,
so please, pour me a shot,
fill my veins with historical blood,
let los dioses de nuestra tierra do the healing!
