Fairy Tales

My brother begged me to read a fairy tale, but I quickly shook my head no.
He gave me his puppy dog eyes, so I had to relent, but lo!
He didn't want Cinderella, or Sleeping Beauty at all.
Rather I made up my own fairy tale, about a little boy at a ball.

He was wearing his finest clothes, and was as handsome as could be.
He waltzed right in with the mice and little larks three.
The princess, she saw him right away, but alas, her father said no.
They looked at each other in vain, close, yet far, as he is reminded of his place: below.
But then, she runs away at night to join him at his little hut.
The boy treated her mighty good, healing both bruise and cut.
They married one day, without permission, to the dismay of the others,
Their fathers were in a rage, as were their mothers.
But it didn't really matter to them,
Because they knew that they had each other.

After my little tale, my brother was in speechless spell,
And then, countless more fairy tales I was forced to tell!
