If I were born a boy
Would I be so afraid to walk down the street at night,
Or even in general, with a haunting fear that a man
Won't be able to control himself
...

Hold your head up when you speak.
Sound your thoughts upon the rooftops
For a mind so great and vast as yours is needed
In this world of chaos.

I Was Born A Girl

If I were born a boy
Would I be so afraid to walk down the street at night,
Or even in general, with a haunting fear that a man
Won't be able to control himself
Or his hands?
Would my heart be pounding in my ears
And my stomach in knots with my hands shaking
As I'm approaching this group of boys
Skeptical to walk past them on the street?
Because I was born a girl and that gives them permission
To catcall me even if it tears away at my dignity.
Oh but of course I can't walk faster past them
Because that would be rude to not just saunter through
And accept insulting whistles and stares and "give me your number"s and "do you have a boyfriend"
Because if I don't have a boyfriend I better talk to them.
If I were born a boy
Would I have to worry about the length of my skirt
And if it's too short to wear outside because someone
Can't keep their eyes up and their junk in their pants?
Would I see a beautiful dress in a store and reach for it but think, With shame and disappointment, "oh wait, that's too inappropriate."
Too inappropriate, not for me because it is the right length,
But for them
Because they're so ruthless that even a dress is too seductive.
Would there even be a right and wrong length for my clothes
If I had not been born a girl?
Had I been born a boy
Would those that love me have that gut-wrenching worry
About me being anywhere alone?
Because people are ruthless and anything can happen.
Would I be as susceptible to being beaten or attacked by the Hands of a man? Because I'm always wrong and they're Always right since I was born a girl.
If I were born a boy
Would I still have to use the buddy system going out at night
Or to a party because once again, boys just can't help Themselves and would stare at my body with eyes of hunger?
Would I know so many girls that have been raped or assaulted
Because they were born girls too?
Would I be allowed to do all that a boy can do
If I had been born one too?
If I had just been born a boy
Would I still have all the additional stresses and worries and struggles
That girls face every day?
Would I still walk faster when a boy walks behind me?
Would I still know that I can't win for losing in this world made For boys?
Because if one were to hit on me,
I would be a easy if I responded and stuck up if I didn't.
Would I still have these problems, and many others,
If I were just born a boy?
