MendOoyo Gombojav Biography

G. Mend-Ooyo is one of the famous poets and writers in contemporary Mongolia. He was born into a herder's family in Dariganga, Mongolia. Since his first book in 1980, he has published over forty other books of poetry, and over a dozen novels and children's books. His books in Chinese, English, Macedonian, Bengali, French and Japanese published in abroad. Mend-Ooyo's writings deal with the life of Mongolia’s nomadic herders, their culture and cultural knowledge. In his style and thematic material, he seeks to express the melody and richness of the Mongol language and nomadic society. His works has been translated into over fifty languages. Mend-Ooyo has been awarded many prizes from literary organizations around the world. Mend-Ooyo has received fellowship from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and stayed at the Civitella castle of Italy for 6 week in 2014. He received the Poet Laureate (with Golden Crown) , highest poetry award from World Congress of Poets, Budapest, Hungary 2009 and has been awarded Grand Prize of the Mihai Eminescu International Academy, Romania 2014. He received the Order of Chinggis Khaan, the supreme honor of Mongolia in 2015 by the declaration of Mongolian president.)

Paradise And Swallows

A mirage on the blue steppe, like a heavenly city.
My ancestors are forever and only in paradise, and
Only the swallows, hanging above the lonely steppe,
Welcome me into my father's land.
A thick blue mist is draped over the sky, and
The swallows alone lead the way with flapping wings.
