Michael. I hear what you say. I suffered bullying at school and then became a bully too in self defence. I learned fairly quickly though that the bully is the bad guy and I was becoming who I hated because of wanting respect. I thought violence and intimidation was the way because that was my only reference. I got new ones and as Robert Frost said 'That made all the difference'.
We need to give kids the right references so they associate violence and bullying with DISrespect.

Has anyone else seen the amazing work by Natalie Merchant in bringing 26 poems to life with music? The album is called Leave Your Dreams and is the reason I have started writing again after nearly three years of just making them up in my head and going back to work. God Bless Youtube!
    And no, I don't get royalties for promotion! ! ! : -)

I work as a construction engineer in England and I relate very well to your poem. I have bulldozed my fair share of trees but can say that I have managed to change a few road designs in the past to save particularly fine specimens and I have also planted a few thousand as well. Oddly enough, the building of bypasses round rural towns seems eventually to result in their slow decline and transformation into commuter dormitories with no shops only offices and a supermarket.
