I swim in language
I natter, chitter chatter
releave myself in text.
Others just dip their feet, but
some drown in it, as
they choke on their
words, suffocated conversations
gasping to be heard.

You bathe in isolation
cocooned, no conversation
others splash, making waves.
The layers of hum and grind,
with the flickering fluorescent
light-ning builds a storm, of
frustrated feelings
raging to be understood.

I observe in silence now
your memorised rituals, replayed.
The flapping hands and
fluttering butterfly eyes.
I hum that Beatles’ song you like
And watch for a reply.
Your head twitching fro and to, fro and to
while you rock in rhythmical bursts.
This speechless conversation,
a prelude to being heard.

You dive into language
swim now with touch screen tech.
I read your natter, chitter chatter
you release your thoughts in text.

‘I listen using all my senses
It’s painful when they overload,
I don’t like to explode.’

‘Speak plainly and be direct, pictures
give me clues, then I need time to reflect.’

‘Dislike new places, can’t read faces,
like familiar sayings, repeated phrases.’

‘I want to join in, but people are exhausting.’

‘I like being me, take time to see
you will discover I am more than my autism! ! ’
