The South

I come from a place where,
Trees tell stories of misfortunes
and grand times and plantations stand
still in time.

I come from a place where
the red clay is infused with the blood of
countless generations
for the preparation of the
greatest nation this earth has ever graced.

I come from a place where pride can be invidious
and the past is hideous, but will never leave because
to me its home.

I come from a place of history
and unmarked mass graves, and ancestors fought
tooth and nail for ubiquitous equity.

I come from a place where
the elderly are wise and teach
the young and at the same time lament in soliloquy.

And yea, some may talk slow with aberrant dialect
difficult for foreigners to understand,
and yea, some may walk slow with a diffident demeanor
but with confidence.

I come from a place where
the winters are mild the summers are hot and humid,
and men work hard, and women take care.

And with that I say this,

I'm proud to be from a land we know as the South
