Lois Duncan Biography

Lois Duncan (born April 28, 1934) is an American writer of children's books, best known for young-adult novels of suspense. She wrote two early novels under the pen name Lois Kerry. Duncan received the 1992 Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her contribution in writing for teens. Lois Duncan Steinmetz was born to photographers Lois Duncan (née Foley) and Joseph Janney Steinmetz. She was born in Philadelphia but grew up in Sarasota, Florida. She started writing and submitting manuscripts to magazines at age 10 and sold her first story at age 13. Duncan attended Duke University from 1952 to 1953 but dropped out, married, and started a family. During this time, she continued to write and publish magazine articles; she has written more than 300 articles published in magazines such as Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest. Her first marriage produced three children and ended in divorce. Later she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to teach journalism at the University of New Mexico, where she also earned a B.A. in English in 1977. In 1965 she married Don Arquette; they had two children.)

As the year draws to an end
We grow close again,
Turning pages of our lives,

To recall a magic time

Springtime sunlight leaps at us
From a smiling face.

Summer laughter rings anew,
