I went to the water, where you and I had sat
where I'd painted the lopsided sugar
building, and watched waves, and
wished the current ran backwards, up the St. Lawrence
seaway, to Michigan, so I could slip into the water
and float on my back to you

This was four years ago, now, and I no longer wish
for the water to flow backwards,
but when I went to the water tonight
and laid on the red and grey concrete
and stared at the unloving cloud mass
I thought I might feel the overlap
of where our bodies were once together

on the ground
above the water
it wasn't like that

I felt the gaping hole
of memory and nothing
at all that felt
remotely like your hand.
