Biography of Janet Lewis

Janet Lewis was born in Chicago in 1899. She married author Yvor Winters in 1926. With him she founded the influential literary journal Gyroscope. She worked as a tutor of creative writing at both Stanford University and the University of California.

As a writer, Lewis is best known as the author of historical fiction such as The Wife of Martin Guerre (1941). However, she also wrote poetry throughout her life and her first and last publications were volumes of poetry.
The first, The Indians in the Woods was published in 1922. Since then her work has grown in popularity and she has been praised by critics for works
"characterized by the vigor and sharpness of her images and the understated lyricism that permeates her rhythmic lines..."

Janet Lewis died in 1998 at the age of 99.
