Elannia Lake Poems

Kampuchea,1975
Not too long ago
The Khmer Rouge Regime arose
All the intellectual, religious, and foreigners fell
...

Walls of white surround
Constant beeping is the only sound
Can’t move, I cry out in pain
Then they sedate me again
...

She sat alone, this child
White as a ghost, pale as the moon at midnight
Her eyes are cold, this child
She frightens others, staring without a smile
...

I asked what you believe
You replied “holy, holy, holy, is he”
But what does that mean?
I mean, obviously, it means something to you
...

I am from a century I wish to escape
Justin Bieber, One Direction, and YOLO swag
Where if you are intelligent, you’re strange
But cool if your pants sag
...

6.

Liar’s distortion, sick and growing
Growing larger and darker
Darker than it began
Began white, or did it?
...

Loneliness has no color, it is only a pit
A dark endless pit of despair
When left by everyone you love
You are likely to find yourself there
...

We all try to explain
But something’s always standing in the way
Semantics
One person thinks one way
...

In my hand you sit
You whisper thoughts in my ear
“Write about love,
Hate,
...

10.

Love is a deep purple
Smells of roses freshly cut
The taste is sweet and it melts on the tongue
Sounds similar to wedding bells
...

Flowing, running, never ceasing
Sometimes calm as she can be
Still and smiling
Content to pass by the waving trees
...

She said 'break the mirror'
The thing that told her lies
She wants to see it shatter
As all it's misleading words die.
...

13.

My battery is running low
My limbs are made of lead
All my limbs feel heavy
And my mind isn’t ready
...

A butterfly sits on my wrist
It reminds me much of the past
All the things that I’ve pushed through
And am trying to get past
...

15.

Envy is green, a disgusting, horrid green
It smells like rotting things
That have been buried so deep
The poignant odor is revolting
...

I sit and stare
Stare in fear
Fear of falling into sleep
Sleep leads to nightmares
...

Ugly, fear-instilling
Not reiterated with ease
Screams
Problematic horrors
...

Melancholy now
Over the moon in a moment
Only a second until I break
Down into tears
...

19.

Fear is dark grey
Not silver or black
It hides its smell behind anger and rage
Holding it’s true feelings back
...

20.

Hope is yellow, bright like the sun
Just one small ray can break through the darkness
It smells like perfume, that penetrates the filth
Tastes like sugar
...

Khmer Rouge Regime

Kampuchea,1975
Not too long ago
The Khmer Rouge Regime arose
All the intellectual, religious, and foreigners fell

Do you wear glasses?
Are you educated?
Do you follow a religion?
Are you anything other than Cambodian?
If yes, you would be dead

For four years this occurred
Because Saloth Sar despised education, and anything foreign
A building, once a highschool
Now the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Prisoners kept inside
Could not drink water
Unless the guard permitted it
They were forced to do gruesome things
And if they refused
They died

The toll taken by this horrific event
2.5 to 3 million lives
20% of Cambodia’s population
This included Saloth Sar
His life was taken to keep peace

All this began in 1975
Some are still alive,
To tell the horrid tale of the Khmer Rouge Regime
