Wasp

Fifty years I'm on these pins
and in that time I've seen some things
I've made friends and enemies
Southampton beating The Reds in the FA Cup
Lawrie McMenemy with his hands in the air
I wasn't quite there

I watched it on the telly

The Red Khmer, they didn't care
cast their shadow everywhere
A people driven to despair
bruised, battered, starved, mutilated
dispatched to an untimely meeting
with their maker
I was quite young

I didn't really see that one

Oz in 91, that was fun
Unprepared and just a little scared
That bit of water that sits on the border
between New South Wales and Victoria
caused a great deal of anguish the afternoon
I realized I was no fish, and if I was

I wouldn't try it drunk

I tried growing ganga
And there on the lawn inexplicably torn
were pieces of my plant
My Dad had arrived to a horticultural surprise
and by the time I got back
the stump was all black

naked and alone in a pot

I had a dog for thirteen years, a beauty
well loved, with large floppy ears
It wasn't often she left my side
except when I needed to take a ride
on an aeroplane to somewhere hot
with beaches and women
which Dublin's got

but not the hot

I met this lass, she was quite tall
but in the end I didn't fall
Some people around me thought
she'd been sent from above
but I was already married
to every available moment

I didn't do love

And now my wheels turn, endlessly turn
on the tarmac before me
I never yearn for the days
when I'd be glued to the chair getting fat
while those around me drift into chat
A relentless cycle that bleeds into creativity
and at the end of the day
what's really in it for me?

Or

Hop on the bike and pootle round town
listening to no one, wearing no frown
At ease to continue scouting for verse
No doubt about it

it could always be worse

Throughout the years I wore some clothes
that never really fit
I patched them up and mended holes
but still they caused an itch
It took a while to reconcile, to understand

It's all on file
