Outside the white lace curtained windows
Flanked by flower-adorned pedestals springing with hope -
The wind blows because it doesn't know any better
People bustle through their day because they don't know better
And the sun shines as if all is right with the world.

The lawn has grown to its full potential, green and alive -
But today is trimmed back unwillingly
By the groan of the lawn mower, resigned to do its job
Outside the window that divides the world.

The jackhammer announces new growth
To a building centuries old that has outlived its purpose
Pounding away to make way for new reasons and purposes
Outside the window that divides the world.

Inside a young mother sits
Beside her infant son made still by reasons unknown
Caressing his silky hair, entranced by his beauty
Her sorrow escapes her defeated frame
In quivering sobs and lamenting cries.

She mourns her loss and her forced new reality
While I sit quietly removed
Watching with sorrow, begging for answers, praying for strength
Agonizing how the world can go on
As if nothing has changed -
Outside the window that divides the world.
