David Clinch Poems

A rabbit in my headlights late tonight
Twitching, flailing dying in the light
Me, I'm kind of scared, upset
Witness to the gruesome sight I met
...

Come on in.
Come on in.
Come on in and sit you down.
...

Look at you, looking at me
Out of the darkness
Unknown, alone, unfree
I am a warning
...

Keep me moored to the harbour,
Don't let this vessel shift.
Unless you are coming with me,
Don't let me float adrift.
...

Caught in the crossfire?
Caught in the crossfire?
Caught in the crossfire?
It's a question
...

Each visit brings new life
Each day you carry us hope
We wait in silent stillness
For night and nourishment
...

And the love of Mohammed and Isra
Is the love that cannot die.
It's a song that was written in Gaza
It's the love that will always survive.
...

She comes down the road, naked and running.
Her body is burning, the planes are still bombing.
This picture has long stayed locked in the brain,
The little girl fleeing the chemical rain.
...

The higher they build their barriers
The stronger we'll become.
We've got to tear these fences down, yeah,
We've got to tear these fences down. X2 rpt
...

Silent, uncomfortable, no sign of help.
Sombre adult sweeping eyes.
Slowly it ebbs away, the feeling.
Success, they say it means so much,
...

The tattoos on her body paint a story
A vulnerable young woman in great pain
Who bewitches, beguiles and bemuses in turn
Who's angry, brittle, gentle and strong
...

He lies in a doorway
With the feet passing by
A crushed can beside him
Could tell of his trials
...

I wake and feel the warmth
A casual arm resting, rising, falling with your breath.
The scattered, anxious dreams of morning
Fade alongside you.
...

When just a boy of six years old
I landed on these shores,
Sailed across from Dublin town,
One-way ticket with my big brother John

A Rabbit In My Headlights

A rabbit in my headlights late tonight
Twitching, flailing dying in the light
Me, I'm kind of scared, upset
Witness to the gruesome sight I met

I should have driven over it I thought
As its last frenzied battle was fought
Be merciful to it in its tragic state
But didn't realise until too late

It was just a small, sentient thing
On the edge of the abyss and giving in
And one living, conscious being
Could smell the fear that death will bring
