Thoughts Of A Broken Heart

Legend has it that if you can't sleep
You're awake in someone else's dreams
So I hope that as you hold her in the womb of your arms
As she lies , dreamily, in a place that once used to be mine
I hope that It's me you dream of,
And it's my warmth you long for.
When you curve towards her,
Your body forming a question mark around hers
I hope I am the answer that you seek;
And my name a silent prayer you say before you sleep.
I hope that even in your dreams you're awake thinking of me
Thinking of me as I think of you.
Tick tock tick tock tick tock,
The clock ticks and I think of you
I count the seconds as they slip by
Stretching our memories to a morning
That clouds you and the sun from me.
I wish I had you but I only have thoughts of you.
So Forgive me, darling
Forgive me for my thoughts
Keep summoning you to a place long forgotten
To a love you left behind
To a heart that bleeds for you
To this skin that you knew so well
To these arms that became frail for loving you
Maybe they held on too tightly, too long.

These thoughts keep you awake
But I know you rather sleep in her bed.
So maybe now I should forget you,
Kiss as many men as I need to
To get the stamp of your lips off my skin.
Maybe now I should forget you,
Wash your scent from the sheets,
And erase the words from the pillows.
Maybe now I should forget you,
Gather the memories you left behind,
Scattered like spinters of a broken glass;
Stuff them into the book you bought me;
Seal them with kisses and tears and mail them to you.
I should forget you.
But Heavens know, and I know it too,
That it's gonna take a miracle to forget you.
So I pray.
I pray not that I forget you but that you remember me,
And remember when there was no one that you wanted more,
I pray you remember the fire and the flame; me and you;
The passion; the pleasure; the nights we touched the skies;
And the mornings that always found us still dreaming.
Now those nights are gone and I dread the mornings.
So I pray,
I pray that when morning finally comes
It rains so that these tears flow freely
And maybe, just maybe, these thoughts will be drowned.
