Peter Was Workin' The Gates That Night

I remember it
Bread night
Big fight
Angels had to break it up
Even a few visas were revoked
THAT made eyes go round
Bread.

I swear to God
Evil walked right up to the Gate that day
Evil wanted his bread too
Of course he did
For Chrissake he’d already been in line twice!
We were wondering if Evil could outeat Glutton
Amen for avarice appetite
Bread.

Evil cut the line to get to the front
He was refused his bread
Evil got pissed
But you’re Evil they said
Bread.

Peter had to come over
Peter told them to give Evil His bread
Swiveled eyes squinted
Evil exchanged his grin for His bread
Bad trade they said
Bread.

I’ll be damned if Evil didn’t just cut the line again
Last cut’s bread still under his arm
They refused Evil His bread
Evil had to be restrained
Bread.

Peter come over again
Said give this Evil sod His bread
Teeth ground tight
Evil’s grin could not be restrained
Traded his grin for cuts of bread all day
Had more bread than anyone
Bread.

As the Gates became bread bare
A hungry haggard Angel came for His bread
I am weary and hungry from feats of mercy
We’re sorry We’re out they said
But at least Evil well fed
I doubt you believe
My own eyes deceive
But that Angel walked away
Smile bigger than when he came
No Bread.

When they could stand it no more
They called Peter over
How could u do that? O injustice!
Peter just stood there
Smoothed his chin
Compassion gives His bread to all who seek
But Evil cut the line, took more than his share

You see, Evil hungered for Compassion most
His bread expels Evil’s hunger
Repeat permitted compassion’s waft to permeate
Belch betrayed his sate
Those he cut, had already eaten

But what about the poor hungry Angel?
He is an Angel
He has compassion too
The Angel understands that sometimes
Evil must be fed with compassion
A few times before his sate
And we’d rather he share His bread instead
