We love you, O flowers, wherever we find you!
And you, O birds, that through the green forests call.
We love you, sweet Nature! Yet, somewhere behind you,
Is hidden a Something that's greater than all.
We scarcely could tell when we started to feel it.
We know only this: that it always has been;
But now, the most artful could never conceal it,
Or prove it is not to the ones who have seen.
For we saw You, O Hidden - saw one tiny glimmer!
A ray pierced the gloom of our hearts' silent night.
We saw, in the stars and the rainbows, a shimmer
Of radiant, limitless, all-seeing Light.
In dim semi-blindness, our thoughts, vaguely groping,
Send out arms of question that search all around;
Oh where is this Thing that, beyond our faint hoping,
Is seen everywhere, and yet nowhere is found?
O Soul of our searching, O Heart of our longing,
Come shine through this darkness, if ever you shined!
Will you leave us wandering, never belonging,
Seeking and seeking, yet never to find?
