Sobek, reptile-headed monster, taketh
Not from preternatural ambiance
A light of startling alacrity. Pray
Holdeth not our heart in ransom, but still
The beating of passionate life in yet
A fashion more frozen from violence.
Demon-Sun, find us not succulent on
Barren wastes, for we would embalm and keep
You forever in a prayer than in fear.

Suchos (Sobek) was the principle crocodile god in Ancient Egypt. In primitive, pre-dynastic times, during season when canals dried up, the crocodile wandered the fields at will, killing and eating whatever or whoever crossed its path.

The Egyptians came to regard the crocodile as a personification of the powers of evil and death, and they associated it with the demonic aspect of the god Set.
