The Little One

With the first rays of dawn
She dived into the thicket
Pecked at the scattered worms
Belched after a hearty meal
Perched on a low branch
Chirped with browned flocks
Dashed into the poodle of water
Splashed till feathers drenched
Preened on the lemon tree
Flew to the paddy field
Munched on tender grain
Rested under the tinned roof
Sipped water from the bird bath
Searched for slimy worms in the bush
Gulped a few more drops from the pond
Waited for fellow friends in the shade
Flew back to the sheltered nest
Stood on the threshold
As dusk ...
