Stuck In Traffic

The highway is packed, and it made me
realize that my life isn't going anywhere.
There is barren land on both sides
with hills at a distance teasing me with
all the possibilities that could've been.

Why do we all take up these narrow paths
when the world at large is so free and wide?
What are we afraid of? Do we just want to cling
to each other even when we are not going anywhere?

We cross a bridge, a river runs beneath us.
I see it unwind to I don't know where, and all
I can think of is to jump to take me with it
even though I can't swim.

Human-beings have been reduced to members
of a dysfunctional ant-farm, and it's not the pain
of realizing this, but it's the emptiness and pointlessness
I fear.

At least one feels pain, but what does one do
when he feels nothing?
